The incredible Miss SONDH!!!

To be or not to be INDIAN!!!

When I was finalising my logo for “ReignFOREST” most people were of the opinion that I should go with the Samarkand font which is basically like the devnagiri script. I must confess I was very tempted but fought the urge to go ahead with it. If you are wondering why, this is what I have against it.....

I think most designers tend to use it to project the "exotic" image of India while we should be focussing on telling the world that we know what we are doing and our design sensibilities are not always "Indian"(read clichés like Om, block prints, ethnic clothes, turbans, tikaas, etc)........so while I am proud of where I come from and personally love throwing in a bit of Indianness to my attire, I would rather be known as someone who has a global view of fashion as well as design. We as designers should want people to judge our potential based on our understanding of fashion, technical expertise, originality and competency as designers.

While up till now India has been a hub for manufacturing and raw material, there has been a paradigm shift. Many Indian designers are getting noticed internationally and are recognized for their creativity and innovation.

One might argue that if Gucci could launch an “India exclusive” collection and Louis Vuitton decided to change its window displays all over the world for Diwali, we might not be so off the mark. Well this is what I have to say-It’s about time they noticed us! International fashion houses are now paying attention to India as the demand for luxury goods in the country is slowly but surely escalating and they want a piece of the action.

Don’t get me wrong I am not totally against ethnic Indianness. I personally love Indian Kitsch. All I am saying is......
-As designers we should curb the urge to build our brands around the concept of Indianness.
-We must hold back from using the novelty of the sari, the turban, heavily embellished clothes and accessories to sell our products.
-We should restrain ourselves from projecting our inherent indianness as our USP as this will only restrict the creative process and slow down our creative evolution.
To be able to compete at the international level we should let the world know that India is a warehouse of talent waiting to be discovered and acknowledged for its ingenuity and creative excellence.
